What is Behavioral Intervention?

Behavioral Intervention is a Medicaid reimbursed service that is available to children with developmental disabilities who display challenging behaviors.  BI therapists work with children to develop positive behaviors and the skills they need to function in typical home and community environments. IBI/BI is a one-to-one service that is individualized for each child. When a child feels safe and secure within their environment and having been given the tools and modeling to express emotions appropriately,  their self-esteem rises and unwanted behaviors decrease.

Some of the activities involved in BI therapy are:

  • Developing functional communication skills in the child's natural environment

  • Embedding social instruction into activities

  • Developing play skills with peers

  • Embedding cognitive skills into routines and activities

BI is provided by a qualified, certified BI professional, in either a one-on-one or a group setting. The BI professional works closely with the family through consultation to model and teach techniques to be used during the therapy time and for the family to continue on with when the allotted intervention time has ended.

Through a variety of assessments, a plan of goals and objectives will be put in place for the BI professional, parent and child to work on together to achieve the best possible outcome for the child. Although this service is typically paid for by Medicaid, private pay is available.
